REEL WRITERS WILL RETURN IN 2017.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
On what merits do the judges base their scores?
Judging is multi-tiered:
• Technical - first impression (15% of score)
• Opening Pages - story hook (25% of score)
• Story - all aspects of story (60% of score)
Judges approach each script as a "surrogate Hollywood reader" (studio readers, producers, agents, etc.).
Can I be disqualified if I struggle with format, grammar, spelling or punctuation issues?
No. But your score may reflect that it's an issue. However, you can polish your script and re-submit it before the final deadline for a low resubmission fee.
I am not in the US. I have no idea how to get my pages to print in US Letter. Can you help?
If I struggle with format, grammar, spelling or punctuation issues, how can I ensure that my revisions won't be in vain?
May I have my script edited for a discount prior to entering the contest?
What makes this competition better or different?
• All entries (even non-winners) are exposed to the filmmaking community via the judging system.
• Fast turnaround.
• Free, multi-tiered feedback.
• Low fees.
• Unique digital stamp for winning scripts (includes link for verification).
What are valid grounds for disqualification?
• If you and/or a family member join the judging team, your script will be disqualified.
• X-rated or NC-17 material (though you may be given opportunity to revise and resubmit).
May I send a hard copy of my script via snailmail?
I am technologically challenged! How do I create a PDF, add a title page, or do other "techy" things required for submission?
What if my judge doesn't care for my script's genre?
Are there any refunds for any reason?
What if I feel my script has been judged unfairly?
Can I become a judge?
Why do I have to include a logline?
If you win, we will help promote you, and the logline is just one of many marketing tools.
How do I know you've received my submission?
I am having trouble paying online or processing in US dollars. Can I send a check or pay another way?
What if my genre has limited audience appeal (period, drama, Christian, musical, LGBT, etc.)?
What if my sex scenes are graphic? Will my script be disqualified as porn (X-rated/NC-17)?
Not porn: They are in bed, pumping furiously, when the doorbell rings.
Porn: Closeup of [genitalia].
Don't make your reader uncomfortable with graphic, specific images. Stay on story. You may be asked to do a rewrite if a judge deems the line has been crossed.
My story involves lots of blood and guts. Does that cross a line?
Suggested: keep graphic descriptions to a minimum. Go for an image and a visceral response, then move on with the story.
How will I know when the judging is finished?
Do I have to copyright my script before I send it?
Are deadlines based on US timezones?
How do I know judges or organizers won't steal my script?
All contestants are encouraged to register scripts with WGA for added peace of mind (regardless, your creative work is legally yours).
If any judge is interested in your script, they are required to contact organizers for contact info after the competition ends, at which time writers may negotiate or reject offers.
